How do I update the TV app?

The page for each TV shows the installed app version and whether a newer version is available. How you update depends on how the app was installed on the device.

How to tell if there is an update

  1. In the TVs menu, click the name of the TV.
  2. On the Settings and Status tab, under Status and Information, look at the App Version field.

One of these labels appears next to the version number:

LabelWhat it means
Up to dateThe app is already on the latest version.
Will be updated to and the version numberThe update will happen automatically the next time the app starts. You don't need to do anything.
Update AvailableThere is a new version to install. Click the label to see how to update.

When there is a newer version, the Latest Available Version field shows which one it is.

Tip: if Will be updated to appears and you want to bring the update forward, use the Restart App command. See What does each remote TV command do?.

How to update

When you click Update Available, the dashboard shows the instructions for your case.

Installed from the app store

If the app was installed from the Google Play Store or the Amazon App Store, updates are automatic. If the update doesn't happen, check that the store's automatic updates are turned on on the device. In some cases, the store may take days to update the app.

Installed from the APK file

If you installed the app using the APK file, updating is manual: download and install the new version using the links in the window. We recommend installing the app from the store so that future updates are automatic.

Your company's branded app

If the TV uses the corporate app generated with your brand, and it was installed using the installer, updating is manual. Under Download updated App, the window shows the .APK / Android or .EXE / Windows link. If you access the dashboard through your company's domain, you can also download it by typing your domain address into the browser followed by /download/android or /download/windows.

If a message appears saying that the app is being updated and will be available in a few minutes, wait and try again.

If your branded app was installed from a store, it is only updated automatically once the update file (.AAB) has been uploaded to the store. See How to generate your branded app.

Older version on Windows

With some versions, you need to uninstall the current version from Windows before installing the update. In this case, the window shows the App installer for Windows link.

Other notices on the TV page

  • On Android devices with very old versions, the dashboard shows: It is highly recommended to update the App on this TV!, asking you to uninstall the previous version before updating.
  • Some features only work on newer versions, and the dashboard warns you in the field itself, for example in Rotation.
  • On some devices used in portrait orientation, the dashboard warns you not to update the Android system to version 10, because the device would stop working in portrait. This warning is about the device's system, not the app.

Note: if you access the dashboard through your company's own domain, update labels are only shown to administrators.
