How do I set up the TV vertically or rotate the image?

To show content with the TV mounted vertically, or upside down, adjust the TV's Rotation field in the dashboard. The app rotates the image without you having to touch the device.

How to rotate from the dashboard

  1. In the TVs menu, click the TV's name.
  2. Click Enable Editing.
  3. On the Settings and Status tab, under Basic settings, choose the option in the Rotation field.
  4. Click Save.
OptionResult
DefaultNo rotation applied by the app.
Rotate 90º rightVertical image, rotated to the right.
Rotate 90º leftVertical image, rotated to the left.
Rotate 180ºUpside-down image.

Choose right or left according to the direction in which the TV was turned on the wall.

It may take a few minutes for the change to take effect, and it only applies when the TV is online. After you save a 90º rotation, the Resolution field, under Status and Information, shows (Vertical).

When you need to rotate on the device itself

On some Android devices that are already set to vertical in the system settings, the dashboard does not show the rotation options and displays the message: To rotate the screen on this device, go to Settings -> Display / Video on the device and change the rotation. In this case, make the change on the device itself. The exact name of the menu may vary from one device to another.

When you need to update the app

If the Rotation field shows Update the app to make sure screen rotation works on this device., the installed version is too old for this feature. See How do I update the TV app?.

Important: on some devices used vertically, the dashboard warns you not to update the Android system to version 10, because the device would stop working vertically. Follow this warning.

Tips

  • Not every device works well vertically. The list of recommended devices shows which ones work with rotation: Which Android devices are recommended?.
  • Prepare images and videos in portrait format so that they fill the whole screen.
  • The Screenshot of a TV rotated 90º from the dashboard already appears the right way round.
