How do I put the TV in portrait (vertical) mode or rotate the image?

To show content with the TV mounted vertically, or upside down, adjust the TV's Rotation field in the dashboard. The app rotates the image without you having to touch the device.

How to rotate from the dashboard

  1. In the TVs menu, click the TV's name.
  2. Click Enable Editing.
  3. On the Settings and Status tab, under Basic settings, choose an option in the Rotation field.
  4. Click Save.
OptionResult
DefaultNo rotation applied by the app.
Rotate 90º rightImage in portrait, rotated to the right.
Rotate 90º leftImage in portrait, rotated to the left.
Rotate 180ºImage upside down.

Choose right or left depending on which way the TV was turned on the wall.

The change may take a few minutes to take effect, and it only applies when the TV is online. After you save a 90º rotation, the Resolution field under Status and Information shows (Vertical).

When you need to rotate on the device itself

On some Android devices that are already set to portrait in the system settings, the dashboard does not show the rotation options and displays this message: To rotate the screen on this device, go to Settings -> Display / Video on the device and change the rotation. In this case, make the change on the device itself. The exact menu name may vary from one device to another.

When you need to update the app

If the Rotation field shows Update the app to make sure screen rotation works on this device., the installed version is too old for this feature. See How do I update the TV app?.

Important: on some devices used in portrait mode, the dashboard warns you not to update the Android system to version 10, because the device would stop working in portrait mode. Follow this warning.

Tips

  • Not every device works well in portrait mode. The list of recommended devices shows which ones work with rotation: Which Android devices are recommended?.
  • Prepare images and videos in portrait format so that they fill the whole screen.
  • The Screenshot of a TV rotated 90º from the dashboard already appears in the correct position.
